Does homeowners insurance cover roof leaks?
Whether or not homeowners insurance covers leaks in your roof, and any resulting damage, depends on what caused the leak. If, for instance, a windstorm or hail damaged your roof, your insurance would likely cover repairs or replacement. But if a maintenance issue like wear and tear is the cause, then you'd likely be responsible for the costs.
Being a homeowner means being mindful of repairs, especially when it comes to your home's first line of defense — the roof. If a tree falls in a brutal storm and careens through your shingles, it's good to know someone's got your back to help cover leaks and resulting repairs. That's why it's important to read over your homeowners policy and consult your insurer so that you know what's covered by your homeowners insurance.
How to spot roof leaks? Spotting a roof leak early on could prevent more extensive repairs like water damage to your ceiling and mold growth in your insulation. However, finding the roof leak's point of origin may prove difficult, sometimes even more so than fixing the leak itself. That's because water will often infiltrate the roof in one location but trickle down to another location, where it starts to dampen the ceiling and walls.
But don't worry just yet ! We'll offer some useful tips that could help you track even the most crafty leaks.
1) Look for roof penetrations
To begin your investigation, start by trailing the stains on your roof upward. The most noticeable signs of roof leaks are penetrations, such as an errant nail, and are actually the most common cause of roof leaks. It's rare for a leak to spring up when shingles are intact, regardless of how old they are.
In addition to isolating penetrations, be sure to check roof vents, chimneys, plumbing, or any other points of entry around the roof. They may be within several feet of the roof leak.
2) Check the attic
With a flashlight in tow, venture up to the attic (if you have access) and search for damp spots and mold growth, which should stand out from the surrounding sheathing. Because it thrives on moisture, mold likely indicates a weak spot in your roof.
3) Investigate insulation
Remember, when handling insulation it's important to wear the appropriate protective gear — such as gardening gloves, goggles, head coverings, pants, and long sleeves.
After you've found the Leak:
Even the most minor leak can cause extensive damage if it goes unnoticed. Luckily, modest repairs suffice in many cases — like replacing a shingle, for example. But if you don't feel comfortable on your roof, or if the leak seems too substantial, it may be wise to reach out to a professional.

The main issue that we were called out to work on was from a newly remodeled unit in the City of San Diego that had been through a significant sewage backup, but we found out that there were a total of 8 units that had been affected by the Sewage Backup. Sewage backups can have a drastic impact on your health and should be taken very seriously. If you or someone you know has had a sewage problem, please have them seek professional help in cleaning the mess and making sure that their home or business is safe.
One reason why this job was so severe was that the resident of the main unit was on vacation for 6 weeks and that meant that raw sewage was able to cause significant damage as it sat for over a month. The initial cause of the backup was one that we have ran into many times in the past. There was a construction company nearby that had been doing a remodel on a close by site jetted the line which caused sewage to explode out of some other properties on the main sewage line. The sewage exploded all over the bathroom of the main unit in this story. This is a common problem, but one that could have easily be fixed because the construction company should check with all homes on the main line to make sure that there were not any problems from the jetting. The construction company had checked some of the properties on the line but did not do their due diligence on the inspection.
The damage to the main unit was significant, as we mentioned the sewage was able to sit for 6 weeks. The backup affected this newly remodeled unit by damaging the bathroom, furnishings, drywall, kitchen, hallway, dining room, and bedroom. The amount of damage to this property was very significant and it was in desperate need of being sanitized. Sewage is not something that should be left to a DIY or amateur workers. The repercussions of doing something wrong, and missing a crucial step is just too high for sewage cleanup jobs. Sewage is the perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria, which can lead to illness and in some cases even death. Hiring a professional is the key to making sure that your job is done correctly and safely, our team at American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services knows what it takes to get your sewage cleanup done correctly.
One thing that could have been easily overlooked by an amateur service is the amount of water damage that the sewage had caused. The sewage was able to sit for so long that mold began to grow in the home as well. This is one way that a sewage cleanup job can turn into a mold remediation job. Overlooking the mold could have left the resident with more health problems down the road, and the professionalism of our crew to be able to spot this gives testament not only to their skill on the job but also how much they care for the well-being of the people that need their help.
If you know or someone you know has had a sewage backup and is in need of sewage cleanup and mold remediation, then have them contact American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services.

One of the good things about providing a service that people are proud to recommend to their friends, families, and clients is that we often get work referred to us. They trust us to provide top quality work consistently and we strive to meet these expectations. We were recently referred to a job from a plumber that often trusts us with his clients and reputation.
This plumber was called out to fix a leaking water heater. He is a very aware plumber and noticed that mold was beginning to grow in the area which the water heater was leaking. This was when he reach out to us at American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services.
One thing that is often on homeowners minds, is how much the cost of the service would be? When we first met with the homeowner he expressed some concerns about mold coverage in his insurance policy. We met with his insurance adjuster and were able to conclude that he did have insurance to cover this damage.
As we mentioned, the mold began when there was a leak in the water heater in the home. The plumber did a great job at fixing the leak, but the damage from the leak had taken its toll. We first did an asbestos test, which came back negative. From here we were able to set up a containment of the mold and begin the demolition of the water damaged area. We also setup dryers in the home. Because of the amount of water that had leaked and because we want to make sure that the home is safe for the homeowner to live in, we expect it to take 5 days for the home to completely dry.
The homeowner said that he was very pleased that we were able to not only help him find out if he had a mold problem but also were able to take care of the problem quickly and effectively. He was also pleased that we worked with his insurance adjuster to make sure that he had coverage for the work that needed to be done. He can now rest assured that his leak, flood, and mold damage have all been fixed.
Mold is one thing that you do not want to take chances with, because of the damage that it can have on your health. We take all the steps to make sure that you home is safe and secure for you and your family. For quality mold remediation service, call American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Service.
Recently we responded to a call from the Eastern Municipal Water District in the city of Perris, California when there was a water main burst. The burst went unnoticed for about 4-5 days because the owners were out of town and in that time was able to cause significant damage to two of the nearby residences. The damage was extensive, so much so that it took 8 days just to dry out one of the homes. We also discovered that at least one other company in the area was not taking good enough care of the equipment that they were bringing into your home, another reason that you should trust American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services.
The water caused such significant damage to one property that we had to spend the next 5 days just cutting out the walls and removing 3 inches of mud that was present throughout the entire floor of the house. Since the water sat for so long, mold damage was present in the home as well. To begin the process of drying and restoring this house, we had to remove every item from the house that was damaged and document each with a photograph. We then have to begin drying out the house, which because the water had been soaking the property for so long, took about 8 days just to dry out.
The water was able to spread onto a second property adjacent to the previously mentioned home. On the second property, most of the damage was concentrated on the sheds that were in the owner's backyard. Like we had to in the other property, we had to remove every item from those sheds and label them so that each item is accounted for and documented with a photograph. Our next step was to remove the 3-6 inches of mud that covered the property owner's driveway.
One interesting thing that we learned on this job is that we were not the first company that was called out to take care of the job, we were called out when another company could not take care of the job that was asked of them, and also caused odor problems when they did do some work. When we showed up to the job, the homeowner asked us if the use of our dehumidifier was going to cause a “smell”. We told the homeowner that there should not be a smell when using a dehumidifier. The homeowner then told us that the “other guys” that were there before had used their dehumidifier and it caused a musty/moldy smell. We inspected their equipment and it was very dirty and not well-maintained. At American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services we clean all of our equipment every time that we use it, and our equipment is maintained regularly. We believe that we should not be bringing in the germs and bacteria that are cleaned out of other people's homes, into your home!
Our team at American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services is located in Riverside, California and serves the surrounding cities and counties as well. We take care of your disasters, big or small, and we work to get you and your family back into your home or business as quickly as possible. We take great pride in our work and treat your home with the best care possible, and unlike some other restoration companies, we invest a lot of time and money into the upkeep and and cleanliness of our equipment.
One thing that troubles many homebuyers is the constant thought that perhaps the previous owner did not disclose everything that was wrong with the property, or that the home inspector happened to miss something serious, and maybe that the previous owner did not take care of the property as much as they should have. Or perhaps, even that the previous owner deliberately covered up damage in order to sell the house. That was the case for a family in Temecula, whom after purchasing a home found out that there was a mold infestation.
The new homeowners in Temecula first realized that they had a mold problem when they discovered mold in their lower kitchen cabinets. They then discovered that there was more mold on the drywall that surrounded the water heater in the garage. The homeowners gave American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services a call and we were able to quickly respond and survey the area. The homeowners told one field team members, Anthony, that they had the home inspected by a mold inspector, and found mold damage in the down stairs bathroom, upstairs master bathroom, and also in the dining room below the master bathroom.
Then the hard work began, with Anthony cutting out a section of the ceiling drywall under the master bathtub. His findings were the fears of many new homebuyers. He found mold as well as high moisture content to the subflooring and drywall. He then had to cut out a small piece of drywall in the garage and found the mold behind the wall as well. This showed the extent of the damage that had occurred and that it would take a lot of work to get the home back to an inhabitable condition.
The steps that we took to fix this problem included:
Mold is one thing that homeowners should take very seriously, and our climate in Southern California can quickly cause an outbreak in a home. Prolonged exposure to mold can have serious health risks and having a professional take care of the job can help your family’s wellbeing.
For this job, the homeowners revealed to us that the previous owner did not disclose this information to them and that is looks like steps had been taken in order to hide the mold damage to sell the home. That is why it is so important to get a thorough home inspection done by a certified home inspector, and make sure that you request thermal imaging, to locate potential hidden water leaks.
Homeowners can sleep more soundly at night knowing that there are home restoration companies out there like American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services, that can help people get their home back to normal, while also making sure that the home is a safe and healthy environment for the family.

Sewage is something that no homeowner or resident wants hanging around for long. The long-term effects of exposure to sewage can be dangerous for the resident as well as the home itself. Unfortunately, that was the case for one renter in the city of Banning with a sewage leak.
Her story began when she gave her landlord a call to discuss a bad smell coming from the residence. The landlord then told her to contact a plumber to get the smell checked. The plumber gave her the unfortunate news, that she was having a sewage leak. The plumber also told her that there was nothing that he could do to help out the renter because he did not want to get under the house with the sewage to fix the leak, he told her that she should contact a restoration company to clear out the sewage under the house.
The renter then proceeded to contact a restoration company and upon their review of the property, said that they could not clear out the sewage without first having a plumber fix the leak. This restoration company referred her to another plumber and this plumber told her the same thing as the plumber before. That he would not go underneath the house without first having the area cleared of sewage by a restoration company.
The renter again called another restoration company and the cycle continued once more, all while more sewage continued to accumulate and began making matters worse for both the renter and the landlord. Until finally, they gave American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services a call and our professional team was able to assess the situation and develop a plan to take care of the problem.
The steps that we took to ensure that the renter could live safe and comfortably in her residence were:
These steps are what set American Emergency Restoration and Reconstruction Services apart from the other restoration companies in the story. We did what needed to be done to get the renter back into a safe and livable home.
Had this problem been allowed to continue too much more, many problems could have arose. First, the renter could have become ill from being exposed to sewage for so long. Second, there could have been extensive damage to the property in the form of mold or rotting floors. And third, that there could have been a pest infestation from termites and rats.
The tenant was very satisfied with our services and was very happy to have to odor removed and to have the problem take care of, instead of being handed off to someone else.
The homeowner was very impressed with our response time and how we were able to take care of the problem that no one else could.
